Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible to become a Notary Public in Louisiana, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be a resident of Louisiana
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Be of good moral character
  • Not have been convicted of a felony or certain misdemeanors

Application Process

To apply to become a Notary Public in Louisiana, you must submit the following documents to the Louisiana Secretary of State:

  • A completed Notary Public application form
  • A $30 application fee
  • Proof of residency
  • Proof of high school diploma or equivalent
  • A background check

The application process can take several weeks to complete. Once your application has been approved, you will be required to take a Notary Public exam.

Notary Public Exam

The Louisiana Notary Public exam is a 50-question multiple-choice test. The exam covers topics such as notary law, ethics, and procedures.

You must score at least 70% on the exam to pass. You have three attempts to pass the exam.

Bond and Insurance

Once you have passed the exam, you must Free Download a $10,000 surety bond and $100,000 errors and omissions insurance policy.

The bond and insurance protect you and your clients in the event of any errors or omissions in your work.

Commissioning

Once you have Free Downloadd the bond and insurance, you will be commissioned as a Notary Public by the Louisiana Secretary of State.

Your commission will be valid for four years. You must renew your commission every four years to remain a Notary Public.
