The Clemson Tigers football program was founded in 1896, and its early years were marked by both struggles and triumphs. The team played its first game on October 31, 1896, against the Furman Paladins, and lost 12-6. However, the Tigers quickly rebounded, and by the early 1900s, they were one of the top teams in the South.
In 1918, Clemson won its first Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA) championship, and the Tigers continued to dominate the conference throughout the 1920s and 1930s. In 1940, Clemson joined the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC),and the Tigers have been a perennial contender in the ACC ever since.
The Tigers' national profile rose in the 1980s under the leadership of head coach Danny Ford. Ford led the Tigers to their first ACC championship in 1981, and in 1982, Clemson won its first national championship by defeating the Nebraska Cornhuskers in the Orange Bowl.
The Bowden Era: A Golden Age for Tigers Football
In 1999, Tommy Bowden took over as head coach of the Clemson Tigers. Bowden led the Tigers to 10 ACC championships and 15 bowl victories during his 12 seasons at the helm. He also coached some of the most iconic players in Clemson history, including quarterback Deshaun Watson and wide receiver Sammy Watkins.
Bowden's tenure at Clemson was a golden age for Tigers football. The Tigers consistently ranked among the top teams in the nation, and they won the ACC championship five times in a row from 2008 to 2012.
Dabo Swinney: The Architect of Clemson's Dynasty
In 2008, Dabo Swinney took over as head coach of the Clemson Tigers. Swinney has led the Tigers to two national championships, in 2016 and 2018, and he has also won the ACC championship six times.
Swinney is widely regarded as one of the best coaches in college football. He has built a dynasty at Clemson, and the Tigers are consistently ranked among the top teams in the nation. Swinney has also coached some of the most talented players in college football, including quarterback Trevor Lawrence and running back Travis Etienne.

The Tigers' victory was sealed when punter Jeff Davis threw a 63-yard touchdown pass to Dwight Clark.
- The "Williamston Miracle": In 1995, Clemson defeated the Florida State Seminoles 24-19 in a game that is still known as the "Williamston Miracle." Florida State was ranked No. 1 in the nation at the time, but Clemson pulled off the upset victory with a last-second field goal by Scott Powers.
