The Life and Death of Major Edward Mannock VC DSO MC RAF: A Hero of the Skies
Edward Mannock was born in London, England, on May 24, 1887. He was the son of a successful businessman and grew up in a comfortable home. Mannock was educated at Eton College and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. After graduating from Sandhurst, Mannock was commissioned into the Royal Field Artillery. He served in India for several years before being transferred to the Royal Flying Corps in 1916.
In 1917, Mannock was transferred to the Royal Air Force, which had been formed by the merger of the RFC and the Royal Naval Air Service. He was assigned to No. 74 Squadron, which was based in France. Mannock quickly became one of the squadron's top pilots and was soon promoted to flight commander.
On July 18, 1918, Mannock was awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery and skill in aerial combat. The citation for his award reads:

Mannock was killed in action on July 26, 1918. He was flying a Royal Air Force Sopwith Camel when he was shot down by a German anti-aircraft gun. Mannock's death was a great loss to the Royal Air Force and to the Allied cause. He was just 31 years old.
