However, Darrow's most important and impactful cases took place in Los Angeles between 1911 and 1913. These three cases, which involved some of the most notorious criminals of the day, cemented Darrow's reputation as a brilliant and fearless advocate.

The McNamara Case

In October 1910, a bomb exploded in the basement of the Los Angeles Times building, killing 21 people and injuring more than 100 others. The bombing was the culmination of a bitter labor dispute between the Times and the International Association of Bridge and Structural Iron Workers.

Two brothers, John and James McNamara, were arrested and charged with the bombing. Darrow was hired to defend the brothers, and he quickly realized that the case was politically charged. The Times was one of the most powerful newspapers in the country, and it had the support of the city's establishment.

Darrow's defense was brilliant. He argued that the McNamaras were innocent and that they had been framed by the Times. He also accused the Times of being anti-union and of trying to destroy the labor movement in Los Angeles.

The trial lasted for months, and it captivated the nation. Darrow's closing argument was a masterpiece of oratory, and it helped to sway the jury in favor of the McNamaras. The brothers were acquitted, and Darrow's reputation as a great trial lawyer was cemented.

The Thaw Case

In June 1913, Harry Thaw, a wealthy playboy, shot and killed Stanford White, a famous architect. Thaw claimed that he had killed White because White had seduced his wife, Evelyn Nesbit.

Darrow was hired to defend Thaw, and he again faced a politically charged case. White was a prominent member of New York society, and he had the support of the city's establishment.

Darrow's defense was again brilliant. He argued that Thaw was insane and that he had not been responsible for his actions when he killed White. He also argued that White had been a sexual predator who had taken advantage of Nesbit.

The trial lasted for months, and it was one of the most sensational in American history. Darrow's closing argument was another masterpiece, and it helped to sway the jury in favor of Thaw. Thaw was found not guilty by reason of insanity, and he was committed to a mental hospital.

The Fatty Arbuckle Case

In September 1921, Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle, a famous American actor, was accused of raping and murdering Virginia Rappe, a young actress. Arbuckle was one of the most popular actors in the world, and his arrest shocked the nation.

Darrow was hired to defend Arbuckle, and he again faced a politically charged case. The district attorney of San Francisco was determined to convict Arbuckle, and he had the support of the city's establishment.

Darrow's defense was again brilliant. He argued that Arbuckle was innocent and that he had been framed by the district attorney. He also argued that Rappe had died of natural causes.

The trial lasted for months, and it was one of the most sensational in American history. Darrow's closing argument was another masterpiece, and it helped to sway the jury in favor of Arbuckle. Arbuckle was acquitted of all charges, and he returned to his acting career.

Clarence Darrow was one of the most famous trial lawyers in American history. His three most important cases, the McNamara case, the Thaw case, and the Fatty Arbuckle case, took place in Los Angeles between 1911 and 1913.

These cases cemented Darrow's reputation as a brilliant and fearless advocate. He was a master of the courtroom, and he was able to sway juries with his powerful oratory.

Darrow's legacy as a trial lawyer is still felt today. He is considered to be one of the greatest trial lawyers of all time, and his cases continue to be studied by law students and lawyers alike.
