Early Life and Career
Carl Icahn was born in Queens, New York, in 1936. His father was a cantor and his mother was a schoolteacher. Icahn attended Princeton University, where he studied philosophy. After graduating from Princeton, Icahn worked as a stockbroker at Dreyfus Corporation.
In 1968, Icahn founded his own investment firm, Icahn & Co. Icahn's early investments were in small, undervalued companies. He would often take large stakes in these companies and then use his influence to force management changes or sell the companies at a profit.
TWA and Texaco
In the 1980s, Icahn made his name by taking on two of the largest companies in America: TWA and Texaco. In 1985, Icahn acquired a large stake in TWA and began to pressure the company to sell its assets. Icahn's campaign was successful, and TWA was eventually sold to American Airlines.
