Early Life and Career

Carl Icahn was born in Queens, New York, in 1936. His father was a cantor and his mother was a schoolteacher. Icahn attended Princeton University, where he studied philosophy. After graduating from Princeton, Icahn worked as a stockbroker at Dreyfus Corporation.

In 1968, Icahn founded his own investment firm, Icahn & Co. Icahn's early investments were in small, undervalued companies. He would often take large stakes in these companies and then use his influence to force management changes or sell the companies at a profit.

TWA and Texaco

In the 1980s, Icahn made his name by taking on two of the largest companies in America: TWA and Texaco. In 1985, Icahn acquired a large stake in TWA and began to pressure the company to sell its assets. Icahn's campaign was successful, and TWA was eventually sold to American Airlines.

In 1986, Icahn took on Texaco, one of the largest oil companies in the world. Icahn acquired a large stake in Texaco and began to pressure the company to sell its assets. Icahn's campaign was unsuccessful, but he did manage to force Texaco to pay him a large settlement.

Recent Years
