The Book of Odes: A New Translation By Michael Nylan
An Ancient Chinese Classic of Poetry and Wisdom
The Book of Odes, also known as the Shijing, is one of the oldest and most important collections of poetry in the world. It is a compilation of over 300 poems that were written during the Zhou dynasty (1046-256 BCE). The poems are divided into four sections: The Odes of the States, The Odes of the Temple and Altar, The Odes of the Lesser Officials, and The Odes of the People.
The Book of Odes is a rich source of information about ancient Chinese culture and society. The poems provide insights into the political, social, and religious life of the Zhou dynasty. They also offer a glimpse into the everyday lives of ordinary people.
The Book of Odes has been translated into many languages over the centuries. However, Michael Nylan's new translation is the first to capture the full beauty and complexity of the original poems. Nylan has spent decades studying the Book of Odes, and her translation is the culmination of her years of research.
